Raven invited all the birds to bring food to a Party. He had a cooking fire built and as the food was cooking he began to realize that he was so hungry he could eat it all. He cunningly sent his guests out to collect more wood and by the time they returned he had eaten everything, to get away he flipped the table with what scraps were left into the fire.
The birds were very angry. The angriest was the wood pecker, who with his long hard sharp beak, pecked at the ashes in frustration. He showered himself with embers burning nearly all his white feathers black. His rage turned the feathers on the top of his head red and they stood up like a crest ever since.
